Earlier in the year we received funding from the Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund for increasing cycle parking across Swindon Borough. We asked residents and councillors for suggestions of where they felt cycle parking was needed. (see earlier news article)
We had a great response, with 46 separate locations nominated. All were investigated, and whilst we weren’t able to accommodate all of the suggestions due to land ownership or space constraints, the following locations were successful;
- Town Centre, Commercial Road – 3 stands outside Baristocats
- Town Centre, Havelock Street – 4 Sheffield stands outside Camargo’s Pizza
- Town Centre, Mechanics Institute – 4 black stands in the car park
- Town Centre, Baker’s café – 2 black stands outside
- Old Town, Newport Street – 3 stands on pavement on junction of Devizes Road / Newport Street.
- Gorse Hill – 4 Sheffield stands outside Co-op on Chapel Street
- Gorse Hill – 2 Sheffield stands in alleyway alongside Salvation Army charity shop
- Highworth – 2 black stands on The Podium, High Street
- Highworth – 2 black stands in the Brewery Street car park
- Highworth – 2 stands at Barra Close playpark to serve Pentylands country park
- Highworth recreation centre – “Toast rack” of 4 stands for the entrance
- Blunsdon – 3 stands in the village hall car park outside the shop
- Blunsdon – 4 stands delivered to the Blunsdon House Hotel
- Blunsdon – 4 stands at The Cold Harbour pub
- West Swindon District Centre – 4 stands at the West entrance.
- West Swindon District Centre – 4 stands at the North entrance (outside McDonalds)
- Village Hotel, West Swindon – 4 Sheffield stands to the right of the main entrance
- Stratton – 3 stands delivered to Dobbies Garden Centre
- Stratton – 2 stands delivered to St Margaret’s Hall and Church
- Stratton – 3 stands delivered to The Grange leisure centre
- Stratton – 2 black stands at The Crown Inn
- Greenbridge Retail Park – 4 stands outside Boots
- Greenbridge Retail Park – 4 stands outside cinema & gym
- Park North – 4 stands at Holy Family Church
- Wroughton – 4 Stands at the Fox and Hounds pub
- Chisledon – 4 stands at the Patriot Arms,
- Haydon Wick – 2 stands at the parish offices
- Rodbourne – 4 stands at the Manor pub,
- Wanborough – 4 black stands at The Harrow Inn
Central South Swindon Parish Council have received funding to organise installation at the following locations:
- Shaftesbury Park – Stands at play area
- Play area outside Lainesmead School – Stands at play area
- Croft Woods – Stands at car park by the mountain bike trail
Central North Swindon Parish Council have received funding to organise installation at the following locations:
- Pinetrees Community Centre , Pinehurst
- John Moulton Hall , Penhill
- Even Swindon Community Centre
- Western Community Centre
- Gorse Hill Community Centre
- Moredon Community Centre
- Moredon & Rodbourne Cheney Library
- Southbrook changing pavilions
Some of the stands have already been installed, and the rest will be in place by the end of the financial year.
We have also worked with the Education Department to use funding from the Healthy Pupils Capital Investment Funding (which is generated from the tax on sugary snacks and drinks) to roll out scooter and bike parking at 15 school sites in the borough. These include:

These have all been installed ready for the start of the new school term!
